2018 Conference Abstracts:




Moog Space and Defense Group’s designs and manufactures components and systems for challenging applications, often approaching the limits of what is possible. In this environment, fault tree analysis (FTA) is a powerful tool to identify the nature of performance failures and evaluate potential solutions. Further, FTA provides an  excellent framework to review new designs and promotes innovation. This presentation will post-mortem a recent investigation to demonstrate how FTA was utilized to efficiently navigate the issue, ultimately leading to a satisfying technical solution, preserved business relationships and increased future capability.



Machine Learning applied within a statistical Design of Experiments (DoE):


This presentation shows how Machine Learning has been applied within the framework of a statistical Design of Experiments (DoE) to improve the quality of an Additive Manufacturing process at Moog.  In this context, machine learning is presented as simply another tool that can be used to complement traditional applied statistics in order to improve the quality of production processes. Additionally, the use of DoE to optimize the hyperparameters of a deep learning CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) is shown, which demonstrates that the tried-and-true methods of structured experimentation can be used to improve the configuration of CNNs and other deep-learning AI algorithms.



An Overview of Problem Solving Tools and Methodologies:


A high level overview of different approaches to problem solving, and road map to find the best tool or method for the problems at hand. Includes 6 Sigma, Lean, Fishbones Diagrams, 5 Whys, Is/IsNot, Plan-Do-Check-Act, Fault Tree Analysis and more. Highlights the strengths and limitations of each.



Internal Auditor Training:


This course teaches a general understanding of the concepts of the ISO 9001 standard and the principles and practices of effective internal audits in accordance with ISO 19011. It will explain the clauses of ISO 9001:2015 in detail and guide students through internal audits that are required for a quality management system based on ISO 9001:2015 and the new upcoming standards. Students will gain necessary auditing skills through a balance of formal classroom tutorials, practical role-playing, group workshops, and open forum discussions. This class is designed to increase the understanding of the ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard which allows companies improve the quality of their products and services and ultimately increase business and market share.
